about

Tjitze Voge in 2001: "Discovering poetry, Dylan Thomas was a first love of mine. Discovering this feeling was shared by voice magician Jaap Blonk cornerstoned this project. Celebrating it between the five musicians on this album made it a quite memorable occasion.
One way of looking at poetry is to see it as a kind of music played with words and meaning(s). One of its most powerful voices in the past century was Dylan Marlais Thomas'. In this project we put his words to our music, our music to his words, rather than turn his poems into songs. Also their atmosphere and intent triggered several small sound poems of our own, found under Welsh titles in the album, Dylan (Marlais!) Thomas being born and bred into that language.

Voice poet Jaap Blonk has been actively involved in poetry and music for over 20 years, voicing musical improvisations as well as performing poetry of Lucebert, Paul van Ostaijen and Kurt Schwitters.
For Vogelkwartet, this is their third CD, the previous ones inviting press comments like: "Timeless and Fascinating", "Crossing Borders with the Grace of Birds", "Alchemy!" and "Brings out the Best in all the Worlds it Touches".
As much as we would have loved to give you the full text of the poems used in this project, the prohibitive cost of doing so makes us hope all the more our recording of the material invites repeated listening.

P.S. It was only in the night after the recording session, leafing through my edition of Thomas' poems, that I realised the major portion of the texts used dated between his 11th and 18th birthday. Children at heart, we subsided to their useful vigour. Being but men, we can grow old evaluating their ageless insight."
